Stress & Immunity
Ever noticed that when you get overwhelmed and stressed out for extended periods of time (more than a few days in a row), you typically end up getting sick? There's a reason for it!
When we are stressed, our immune system's ability to fight off antigens is reduced. Stress releases the hormone “cortisol” into your system. In short spurts, this can boost your immunity by limiting inflammation. However - too much cortisol in your bloodstream from prolonged periods of stress can have the opposite effect, and opens the door for excessive inflammation.
Stress also decreases the body's lymphocytes, the white blood cells that defend your body against infection. Lower lymphocyte levels means more risk for infection.
High stress can lead to depression and anxiety, which in turn cause sustained levels of higher inflammation. More inflammation means an overworked immune system that can't properly protect you.
So how do you relieve stress and give your immune system a break? Here’s one of my tried-and-true strategies that gives your mind a break, reduces short- and long-term stresses, and provides relief to your immune system.
Getting Ready: You can complete this exercise right where you are - without anyone even noticing. Anytime you're feeling disconnected from your body, start this exercise.
Grounding Exercise: Close any books, computers, devices etc that are near you. Look around you. Identify and name:
Five things you can see
Four things you can feel
Three things you can hear
Two things you can smell
One thing you can taste.
Complete this practice through two to five times, identifying and naming new things each time. Afford yourself the freedom and time to explore. Focus on the task at hand, allow yourself to fully experience each step.
